Overview

The Individual Support Specialist position involves supporting and assisting individuals who experience developmental and physical disabilities with the daily living skills and community inclusion activities. Responsibilities include providing direct care, attending and participating in community events and recreational activities all centered at our Discovery (Recreational) Center. This position will also assist in the planning and implementation of recreation programs that occur in the Discovery Center.  The Individual Support Specialist within the Discovery Center will support and supervise 3-5 Support Recipients in a group setting in the community. 

Responsibilities

  1. Implements support services as outlined in the individual's Plan of Care including but not limited to activities of daily living, day habilitation, employment, inclusionary activities, and active learning.
  2. Assists in the coordination of services, communicates and follows through with team members while providing program support in the Discovery Center or community.
  3. Performs lifting duties safely and uses appropriate techniques and body mechanics when performing job duties.
  4. Assists individuals with  toileting, repositioning, feeding, cooking and other recreational activities as needed.
  5. Models positive communications and promotes community connections with individuals.

Qualifications

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED

Desired

  • Experience working with kids, teens, and adults ages 8-80 in a sport, recreation, summer camp or teaching environment.
  • Experience developing and implementing skill building lesson plans or scheduling recreation events.

Other

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. or 1/3 of body weight, whichever is less, from a squat-and-kneel position
  • Must be 18 years or older, per State of Alaska regulations
  • Possess a valid driver license & at least 3 years of driving experience (may include permit time)
  • Provide driving record that meets agency guidelines
  • Pass criminal background check under state regulations
