    Overview

    Behavioral/Mental Health Associates (B/MHA) are responsible for teaching social, communication and other needed life skills to individuals who experience developmental disabilities and challenging behaviors. B/MHAs work one-on-one or group settings with adults and children in their homes and communities and participate in the individuals’ planning and support teams. B/MHAs also implement therapeutic activities and positive behavior supports for these individuals. Responsibilities include assisting the individual and family in adapting to home, school and community environments and in designing social & recreational plans for individual skill development.

    Responsibilities

    1. Supports the individual and family in designing the social/recreation component of the Treatment Plan; helps individual receiving support adapt to home, school and community environments.
    2. Implements one-on-one therapeutic techniques, activities and events that aid the individual in developing or improving specific communications, cognitive, social independence or community skills.
    3. Provides supervision, monitoring and appropriate therapeutic interventions in a one-on-one setting during activities and events.
    4. Facilitates natural support connections within the community; creates and maintains a comprehensive file of community social/recreational and resources for use with activities.
    5. Models positive communications and promotes community connections with individuals.

    Qualifications

    Required

    • High School Diploma
    • Bachelor's degree preferred

    AND

     

    • Two (2) years experience working with individuals with challenging behaviors.

     

    Desired

    • Direct experience working in special education
    • Ability to demonstrate understanding of concepts of generalization and normalization, least restrictive environments, interdisciplinary team, and behavior modification, and the tools used

    Other

    • Ability to lift 35 lbs, or 1/3 of body weight, whichever is less, from a squat-and-kneel position
    • Possess a valid driver license & at least 3 years of driving experience (may include permit time)
    • Provide driving record that meets agency guidelines
    • Pass a criminal background check under state regulation
